I can’t find the book I want.
Sometimes a book was missing so could not be digitised. Some earlier ones were digitised in a previous project and are available from Archives New Zealand (through the Archway website). These are:
- Auckland Land District surveyors' field books – 24 books
[Series 24484; 1 to 84] - South Auckland Land District - 4 books
[Series 1180; 9, 19, 75 and 86] - Gisborne field books – 19 books
[Series 24487; 8 to 97] - Taranaki Land District Surveyors field books - 193 books
[Series 24473; I, M, N, O, T, U, HW, TK, W, Patea] - Wellington Land District Surveyors field books – 104 books
[Series 24474; various between 3 and 617] - Otago Surveyors' Field Books - 97 books
[Series 24967; 3 to 266] - Southland Surveyors' Field Books - 80 books
[Series 24970; 2 to 142]
- Auckland Land District surveyors' field books – 24 books

I can’t find a specific page.
While the images are numbered in sequential order, this does not match the original page numbers. Since books were not consistently numbered, adding in the page numbers would be complicated and inconsistent (especially for books where pages are numbered ‘1 to 20’ from the front, and then again ‘1 to 20’ from the back). You will need to browse a book content to find the specific images that meet your requirements.
-
Why are the pages upside down?
The field books were digitised following the original page numbers direction where possible. Surveyors created and numbered books in many different ways so we picked a logical ‘front’ to copy from. Sometimes images are upside down as that is exactly what you would see in the book. To avoid confusion the images have not been rotated and all books are shown left-to-right from the designated front cover.
-
Why are the images fuzzy?
The images you see are smaller ‘viewing’ copies. These load rapidly but are lower quality. To see a much clearer ‘high-quality’ version, click on a specific image, then on the “zoom to 100%” button on the left-hand bar. This retrieves the larger, high-quality image.
-
How much will this cost?
All digitised field books are free to search and download. Images from physical books still held by LINZ (South Island books and those created or numbered after 1971) are charged for, to recoup the costs of physically retrieving and copying them, at the standard charge of $25 plus $1 per page.
-
The book I want is for the South Island or after 1971. How do I get it?
Complete a standard RMC ('Request Manual Copy') on the LINZ website. We will copy the relevant pages and get them to you, although this will incur the standard charge of $25 plus $1 per page.

Why aren’t these in Landonline?
Loading many multi-page items into Landonline is a complicated process, and we are working on how to manage these and other large and complex data. This system is an interim step so people can use the images while we ensure our systems are robust and reliable.
-
Is there any copyright on these images?
Yes, we are using the standard Creative Commons license CC BY 4.0 to assert Crown Copyright. It means you can use the images, as long as you clearly state they come from LINZ.
